When is the next election?


The 2022 Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2022. This was moved from March 8, 2022 due to a court order from the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Candidate filing was suspended on December 8, 2021 due to a court order. Do existing candidates have to file again?


No, any candidate who previously filed before the court order will remain on the ballot for the Primary.

What are the qualifications to be elected to office?


  • A registered voter in the county of residence
  • At least 21 years of age
  • Eligible to vote for the office filed for *(see note)
  • Note: for municipal elections, that means also a resident of that municipality

Can an unaffiliated voter get on the ballot for the primary?


No, a person registered as "unaffiliated" shall be ineligible to file as a candidate in a party primary election.

Can an unaffiliated voter get on the ballot for the November General election?


Yes, provided the individual has fulfilled the requirements for a successful petition and filed with the Board of Elections by 12:00 noon on May 17, 2022. Contact the Board of Elections office for more information.

Can I change my party affiliation before filing for a partisan office?


No person shall be permitted to file as a candidate in a party primary unless that person has been affiliated with that party for at least 90 days as of the date of that person filing such notice of candidacy (per NC G.S. 163-106.1 ).
